He studied Master Public Policy & Public Management and Master Business Economics at Ghent University. He subsequently completed a postgraduate degree in Energy & Climate at the UA. He has experience as a Public Affairs Consultant and as a Renewable Energy Project Manager at a Development Agency (focus electricity).

Nature & Become 9: allies in the transition to a climate-neutral society



Half of the CO2 we emit remains in our atmosphere. What happens to the rest? Well, our oceans and forests absorb a lot. You can check this in the graph below. 

Scientists call these "natural sinks" for CO2. But our sinks are under pressure due to all kinds of factors such as global warming, deforestation and changing precipitation patterns. The so called buffer capacity of our forests and oceans is therefore decreasing. We have an imbalance!

Almost all scientific models predict a decrease in the so called "sinks". If the water in our oceans becomes more acidic, the will absorb less CO2. But also our "land sink" is under pressure due to increasing droughts, rising temperatures and forest fires. 

Our ecosystem is exceptionally robust and recovers itself (gradually). But global warming and more extreme weather conditions are making this recovery more difficult. What can we do? Well, the answer is as simple as it is ingenious. Fighting global warming by emitting less human CO2, but also by reforesting the world.

Onze ecosystemen zijn bijzonder robuust en herstellen zichzelf geleidelijk, maar door de klimaatopwarming en extremere weersomstandigheden wordt dat herstel bemoeilijkt. Wat kunnen wij doen? Wel het antwoord is even simpel als geniaal. De strijd tegen de klimaatopwarming aangaan door minder menselijke CO2 uit te stoten, maar ook door ons steentje bij te dragen aan de herbebossing van de wereld.
